Julian Festival 2026: Annual Lecture - Julian's Sensory World: Embodied Knowledge in Medieval Norwich

Saturday 9th May
The Friends of Julian 45th Annual Julian Lecture ‘Julian’s Sensory World: Embodied Knowledge in Medieval Norwich’ will be delivered by Margit Thøfner, senior lecturer in art history and a trustee of the Friends of Julian. This will take place at 1.00 p.m. in Dragon Hall on King Street, in partnership with our friends at the National Centre for Writing.
In her lecture Margit will explore Julian’s sensory world through works of art and music from medieval Norwich and beyond, works that allow us to grasp something of how Julian’s knowledge of her world was rooted in lived experiences rather than just in contemplation. The central aim is to show how medieval art and music offers fresh perspectives on Julian’s explorations of what it was and still is to be human in a troubled world.
Book your FREE place here in advance, as seats will be limited.
The Festival High Mass, including the Companions’ Renewal of Vows will take place at St Julian’s Church, starting at 10.30 a.m. If you have accessibility needs at the church please contact Howard Green, in advance of the day: howard.green@julianofnorwich.org
At 3.30 p.m. the Friends of Julian will hold their AGM at St Julian’s Church followed by Evening Prayer.
