The accompanying catalogue to the exhibition of new art celebrating the 650th anniversary of the ‘shewings’ of Julian of Norwich,  Love Is The Meaning.

This beautiful, full-colour, 60-page catalogue not only has images of each artist’s work but is also a souvenir guide to Julian and the city she knew.

Lucy Care, the Exhibition Curator, writes, “Julian saw her ‘pictures’ as she lay gravely ill, near to death.  She thought they were so very important. So in this anniversary year it seems good to us to remember that she is describing her meditations on ‘visions’ sent to her by God, pictures, not words. And she describes her pictures so exactly, is so keen to discriminate between bodily and spiritual vision and is so clear and unique in her descriptions that it seemed important to return to those pictures and consider what she saw.

Therefore, we asked artists and poets to look again at her descriptions of her visions and explore their meaning in our day. As Professor Barry Windeatt asks in his Julian lecture earlier in the year:

what and how does Julian see in her mind’s eye? How does
she write about seeing so as to share distinctive insights
with her readers? How may what Julian records seeing in
visions have been shaped by what Julian had seen around
her in Norwich?’

In this exhibition we have the individual responses of thirty-four modern artists to that question. They come from several different countries and backgrounds, Christian and non-Christian. I have been delighted by the wide variety of media used by the artists, from traditional stone carving and stained glass that Julian would recognize to light and sound installations, bronze, and textiles. We are so humbled by the thought and skill that they have all put into producing work on a difficult subject. Many of them, as you will read, have been personally inspired by Julian’s writing.”
